author, Commedia dell arte: a handbook for troupes

"As an actor, she shows great range, excellent comic timing, a sense of ensemble playing and a warm and honest stage presence... She is a very fine Commedia player, with a good sense of her own physicality and the wit and intelligence to use it."

Kate Meehan has been performing, writing and educating on Commedia dell'Arte for three decades. Her students are easy to spot - their performances are anchored in their bodies, and reflect the surprise and spontenaity that comes from genuine acting.

She is a founding member of the Austin Commedia Society, now La Fenice, and has trained with internationally acclaimed Commedia dell'Arte instructors, written extensively on Commedia dell'Arte themes in cross-cultural and historical contexts, and written and performed dozens of original and adapted Commedia dell'Arte works for modern audiences around the globe.

Her workshops and lectures are not just for period performers. Commedia dell'Arte marks the rebirth of professional theatre on Western stages, and heavily influences all modern theatre practice from Shakespeare to the avant garde. She teaches coursework on mask work, Commedia and Shakespeare, devised performances, movement for film and motion capture, and has consulted for film and stage alike. Her workshops are fun, engaging, and geared towards the development of whole artists.

As an artist, Kate focuses primarily on photography and the construction of theatrical properties.
